ok im lost. my truck started making this noise shortly after i got it. its a poly 318 with a 4 speed. its a squeeling sound that comes and goes and sounds like a belt squeeling. first i changed the water pump, then the alternator. still squeeling. so today i pulled the belt off and fired the engine, still squeeling. there are no belts hooked up. i listened to see where its coming from and it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine. does anyone have a clue what it could be? thanks. here is a link to the video.

Something is definetly rubbing. I would check your timing cover. Perhaps your balancer is some how rubbing. Other than that I am at a loss as well.:-k

It wasn't long ago a member here had the same problem and did exactly what you did... removed the belts. I can't remember what his problem was after he fixed it. I would like mentioned examine the balancer. I mean what else can it be... main bearing, timing chain gear, timing chain.... it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine.

has the engine been apart recently ?? possibly wrong bolts {too long} on the crank pulley-to-balancer ????? bolts rubbing the timing cover O:)

thanks for the replies everyone. the strange thing about this engine is it doesnt have a balancer. just a crankshaft pulley. but maybe thats rubbing on something. its just strange because the noise comes and goes, oh and it only does it once the engine warms up.

I bet that front crank seal in the timing cover is rotted and dry as a bone squealin against the crank.

No balancer????? Myengineisabouttoblow say What!!

nope. i guess the trucks that came with poly 318's and 4 speeds didnt have balancers. instead it has a really deep crankshaft pulley. wierd huh?

That IS weird! Good ole Mopar did some strange stuff back in the day.

Sorry, I'm no help with the squeeking...I just thought the balancer thing was strange.

no problem. today i ran it again and crawled under my truck. it sounds like its coming from behind the crankshaft pulley. so tomorrow i am going to pull the timing cover. im very curious as to what i will find. im hoping maybe the seal is dry and sqeaking. that would be an easy fix. if its something major, i guess i will just start restoring the truck a little sooner than planed. i dont want to dump a bunch of money into this poly. i have a 400 and 440 crank as well as a 727 sitting here to go in the truck.

Had an old Chevy inline 6 with a 3 speed behind it the squeak would come n go. It like yours sounded like it.was.comin from the crank or front structure. It took me a weak to find.a.persnickety throwout bearing and siezed pilot. Just something to kick around. That stupid.crankshaft transmitted the noise from the back all the way up front. Worth looking into. Good luck

thanks for the tip. i forgot to mention the throwout bearing was the first thing i changed, but i didnt change the pilot. i sure would hate to pull that 4 speed again.

well heres where im at on the truck. i pulled the tranny to see if that was it. but it wasnt, so i pulled the timing cover off. the front seal looks fairly new, still rubbery and soft. i also checked for scrape marks but didnt see anything unusuall. so today im going to pull the pan.

alright guys! i figured it out. its not good. but at least now it wont drive me crazy. i need to resize some pictures real quick then i will post them. anybody got another guess before i put pictures up?

alright, well here goes. i started pulling bearing caps from the front to the back, everything was looking good...... and then i got to the thrust bearing. as you can see it all chewed up, and the top bearing with the oiling hole was in the cap and the bottom bearing was in the block, i dont know if someone installed it wrong, or it spun.

Do you have a mechanic's stethoscope to use in searching for the source of the sound? If not, you can use a broomstick. Press the end of a broom against the engine block, etc., place the upper end of the broom against your ear, cup your hand over the broom and your ear to isolate out external sounds, move the bottom end around to search for the sound. You'd be surprised how effectively this primitive method works.

Sorry, you posted just as I was typing. Well, that would certainly be cause for a squealing noise. Glad you found it.

haha thanks. yeah im just trying to get a few more miles out of this old poly. im not ready to build the big block for the truck yet because i plan to tear the whole truck apart and restore it when it comes to that.

The sides of the thrust bearing appear undamaged. To me, that would indicate that it was installed backwards. had the bearing actually spun, the thrust surfaces would also show damage, but they appear not to. Damned if I would not snatch it completely down and have that crank and block checked out in that thrust area though. JMHO.

well chuck needs to see this post i didnt think of one of them he is /was not sure lol having the same thing in his val CHUCK HERE U GO LOL
