Leaking Pinion Seal...8-3/4 ???

The crush sleeve is only on the 489 case if it hasn't been replaced with a solid type. if you have the 741 or 742 just R & R the yoke and replace the seal. Before you take it apart, after you removed the driveshaft, make sure your yoke has absolutely no up and down movement, or slack in the bearings. I know your suppose to replace the crush sleeve on the 489 evertime you loosen the pinion yoke, but i have done it many times in the past and not had a problem. Just have to make sure you don't over tighten the pinion nut. It takes between 250-400 ft lbs to crush the sleeve. And your right, inspect the seal surface on the yoke for a grrove where the seal rides. They make Miro sleeves that slide on the yoke to repair this. Or replace the yoke if bad.
