auto vs. 4spd, the age old question

Oh I don't know.

Slicing through traffic, with a glimpse of steel and a flash of light.

When the starship is on the horizon and your butt is on the line, last thing i wanna think about is what gear the trans is in.

Clutches might be cool, look cool but there was good reason 99% of all Mopar cop cars had auto trans and non posi rears. Not losing control was more important than being a tad quicker. On the street in high speed pursuit too much is happening too fast to be shifting gears yourself.

But I'm totally hardcore. Helmets I believe in more than seatbelts. In high school in the early 80's the cop I hated but respected, totaled out 9 cop cars he used to brag about. No seat belt for him but always had his helmet on. Said that help protect him even outside the car but back then cops needed strength and guts, today its the Taser, ugh

I alway loved manual shifting, it's a lot of fun. But them came the Woodward Dreamcruise and a manual is a BIG hassle. It's funny now that most racecars; indy, NASCAR, F1, drags, etc., have autos except when the rules do not allow them.

Spoken like a true automatic lover! lol Seriously though I don't even think about what gear I am in, I do drive a stick every day though.... I also feel everyone should have to learn how in a stick car because it forces you to pay more attention to the road and the car which in turn in my mind makes you a better driver.

My buddies dad who was a cop once told me " I have never unbuckled a dead person"

I'm with you on not thinking about it. I cant remember the last time i had to look to see what gear I was in. You get use to how the car feels in each gear.

Bang the gears.
Me and the wife refuse to own automatics.
My wife had to look for a few months before finding her new dodge with a stick in a car.
Sticks seem like the are coming a part of the past.

If consistancy is important to you, you cannot out shift an automatic.

With these nice high stall converters today any auto can be fun on the street. Besides my left foot is always resting lightly on the brake pedal, I can start to brake before my right foot is completely off the gas.

I have a nice PTC 3,500 in my Duster, while it's nice, it's still not nearly as fun to drive as my old-school A833 Dart. And my Duster has a better built, faster small block in it.

Well you could compromise and run and run what I have. I'm running an automatic 727 with a manual valvebody, 3500 stall and a ratchet shifter. It gives you the best of both worlds.

I like them both, for different reasons. I wouldnt have a drag car autocross, or vice versa. The drag car would be an auto, the AX would be a stick. A street car, I'd rather have a stick.

I have a 4- speed RR and an 360 727 in the demon, they are both fun but the auto in my demon is built, bolt in sprag, super clutch pack, VB mods and to top it off a dynamic stall that will flash to 4,400 rpm, toss in the Drag radials i run on the street and hands down the auto wins, Feels like i am shot out of a cannon. My buddy with his BB camaro 4 speed sees my taillights all the time and every time he changes gears fall farther back LOL

3 pedals and a BIG STICK = FUN a 340 doesn't hurt either

The Prowler is auto with autostick, just not the same

Have to agree with stick on Woodward, but that is one weekend a year, left mine in neutral most the time I was there

Driving an automatic.... All you are doing is going for a ride.
Driving a stick car..... Now you are "driving" the car.

Just my opinion:)

4 speed all of the way. I changed my Barracuda from automatic to manual. I was actually thinking about racing my car quite a bit but still able to drive on the street. I was looking for a really high quality stall convertor and to rebuild my trans and etc. Suddenly I just decided you know what I don't want to race it so much now but to shift through the gears and have some real fun on the street with the car. I'm still putting a Hurst V-gate shifter in my car though I don't plan to race just always wanted one.

4 speeds are just fun and awesome especially with a powerful engine, 4.10 gears, and realitively light car. Mines at the body shop and my body guy wanted me to drive car around the block. So I go, with no lights bumpers or even licesnse plate BTW gotta love small towns, I go down one road whichh is a bit of a speed trap but see no cops. I give it just a little gas and row through gears I'm doing 70 in a 25. Yes, that's dumb but that's the fun of a 4 speed I wouldn't have done with my auto though it had a reverse manual valve body.
