column shift

I have a column shift column sitting in my shed that I might modify just for kicks to see if an idea I have is possible. What I would look at doing is shortening the column, but from the other end (or the middle to leave the mounting brackets in the same place), and moving the shift arm that's in the engine compartment to the passenger side of the firewall. Then, I'd use a cable like aftermarket shifters have and run that through the floor near the bellhousing.
