Valve Train Question

My 340 that was just rebuilt has a lifter tick in it. It currently has nonadjustable rocker arms. I have a set that adjust that came on another motor. My question is how do you adjust them? What clearance do you use? Do you do it running with the valve covers off? Someone Please enlighten me. Thanks Jeff
