I always thought a late model AMC trans built to fit an AMC WAS a 904/727:

AMC had all brands of parts incorporated in their cars.

In a way, you are correct, but the AMC bolt pattern and actual size of the trans is slightly different than a standard MoPar unit. The internals from what I understand, are the same.

It's the easiest TF to put on a non-mopar. It's also the son of an unwed mother.

67 I think it was just a interesting read on the largely unknown but yet small difference's in the tranny's. Like a "Hey, check this sh%&* out, look what we can do!" article.
 
I don't know all the specifics, but my cousin has a 78 AMC Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a turbo 400. It is the original drivetrain.

There just using an adapter plate to hook up the motor they want to that trans. They do it all the time with sand cars and adapter plates are used to hook up transaxles to all kinds of different motors.
 
AMC used the TF727 and TF904 from the early 70's in passenger cars. The FSJ's (Full Size Jeep) used the TH400 from 1966 through 1978 and switched to TF727 in 1979 and used this until the end of production in 1991. International Harvester also used the 727/904.

I could have written a full article about some of the parts AMC used that were manufactured by other companies but I failed to see where it would add benificial information to the thread.
 
Speaking of auto manufacturers using proven parts from larger car companies..

Ferrari 400s used Turbo 400s for the automatic cars. A lot of the owners have now swapped in 700R4s...bolt-in.

Rolls used GM trannys, alternators and A/C systems on their cars in the 70s.
...about the only thing that did not break.

AMC used Motorcraft carbs and electrical systems back in the day.

OK smart guy if you knew the answer to the question, WHY COULD YOU not just simply answer it? The question I posted is NOT what every single part AMC used, it is ABOUT this magazine article, which on one hand seems to indicate that they are talking about an AMC case 904/ 727, but yet the mention that you can "use an adapter to mount it to a Mopar."

For the ultimate in race 727 technology, A-1 offers its ProFlite transmissions for use in NHRA's Comp Eliminator and Super Stock Modified cars, regardless of the brand of transmission the car originally came with. ProFlites are designed to fit wherever a Powerglide once resided. Based on smaller AMC 727 casings (which are narrower in the bellhousing region by 1.5 inches) and featuring light-weight 904-based internal components, these transmissions are so efficient they require only 125 to 150 psi of line pressure to function compared to the 225 psi required in the race 'Glides. The lower the pressure, the less power is wasted turning the pump. A-1 ProFlites are available with 25 different gear-ratio combinations, are available with a billet aluminum adapter to fit Chevrolet engines that allow the use of Powerglide torque converters, and are able to withstand up to 1,300 hp.
