small block build ?

If you go with either the XE284H or XE285HL, or the Lunati 403/404 & run 1.5 rockers (adjustable), Run the KB190s, Mild or stock J heads, even X heads, A 34-3600 stall & bare minimum 4.30 gears, 750dp you'll be more then happy, It'll kick some serious butt & still be very streetable, Make sure you invest in a good adjustable ignition. Its all up to you, what do you "really" want for perf., IMO by your tone, you want something on the mean side but still streetable, This combo will do it & you'll have great quench.

4.30 bare minimum? Depends on tire size not just rear gear. If running a short tire 4.30s will be a PITA. You don't need steep gears to have a fun street car, likewise converter stall. A 3k converter will act a tad looser with longer gears anyway.

If sticking with the pistons you have then get some aftermarket closed chamber heads as already mentioned, the 404 cam with the Comp rockers and 750 carb then figure a rear gear you can live with on the freeway. Rear gear is essentially free horsepower but you may find buzzing 4000rpm for half an hour unpleasant.
