elec. problems...
If you have a melted fuse box, chances are that you need a new harness...........It's entirely possible that the main harness buss behind the drivers side of the dash (that is, behind your gauge cluster, and clamped around the upper left portion of the cluster) may have some issues.............at times, due to age and friction, these short out....screws through the dash can also cause the problems, starting slow, and ending in full blown disasters.
You definitely need to disconnect the system from the battery, and remove the gauge cluster and dash components, including your fan switch section.............if you have plastic dash covers in the center and on the glove box, you need to remove the center portion by removing 2 nuts up inside the dash on the back of the center trim panel.........then you can access the area behind the radio and heater controls.
Harnesses are made specifically for the car in question........I've seen a few out there for these A-Bodies..........you MIGHT save the one you have, but you'd have countless hours of work peeling back burned areas and splicing in new sections, and even then there could be places you miss.
At any rate, you won't know until you fully expose the harness inside that dash, hold it in your hands, and give it a very close and thorough inspection. I've done it on a few occasions......not as bad as it sounds. Just a little patience.
Good Luck..................:burnout:
