I have a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger with a 318 2bbl right now and i want to give it more get up and go with a 4bbl, but theres so many to choose from i dont know wut to go with lol. Could some one share some wisdom and led me in the right direction?

i used a performer rpm manifold with a holley 600 vaccume secondary. the carb was from allstate carbs in rochester, NY. it worked fine.

The performer/600 Holly is a good combo :D
Believe it or not the best my 318 ever ran was with a Thermoquad on the Performer. Geat mileage (18-20 mpg) and performance was good. But the plastic cracks and you get leaks
I currently have a 750 on a Torker II - What a pig! Runs great above 2K rpm though.
Thinkin bout a Demon though - Thoughts, reports?

Performer 318/360 non EGR, and a Thermoquad would be my first choice. 600 eddy would be second, 600 Holly vaccum sec. 3rd.

I had great luck with an edlebrock setup. Performer manifold and a 600cfm manual choke setup. Smokey burnouts.....through a sure grip rear.

That's a distant memory now as I am installing the 340 within the next week.

my dad has a 750 road demon on his olds 350 with a performer rpm, cammotion custon grind, and stock heads. the thing wasnt that great of a quality from jegs. it was missing a float, and there were metal shavings in the metering block. a quick call fixed that problem. the new one had to be cleaned out being that it had metal shavings as well, but it runs great. i think im just going to go for a proform holley though because of the quality issues with demon.

Thnx for all the advice guys im sure this will make my carb hunting alot easyier thnx :D [/img]

Seems I can't go anywhere without seeing that engine<BG>. Must be a sign that I need to get going on the stroker.

Get going buddy. There will be more progress towards gettin it in the car tonight. 74 days to go, and a mountain of work to do.

Hey Swinger:
I don't think you're going to be happy with just a carb upgrade, but i do read into this that you are on a budget as most of us are so please let me make a couple of suggestions if i may. I like small blocks. They can be made to put out a bunch of get up and go. Do the carb thing now if that's all you can afford then while your crusing the junk yards get you a set of 360 J heads and have them filled with the 2.02 intakes. These can be had resonable. With just a carb you have increased the input capabilities but still restricted on the intake and exhaust side and if you cant move it to the cylinders and get it out of the cylinders you have a bottle neck. I buy old scrap cars and trucks and vans for the motor and trans and pull what i want and haul the rest to the recycle(crusher). On the last one i paid $100, took out the 360, trans, and dana 60 and kept them then sold the van for $117 to the scrappers. You can do the same if your into that and tight like me. I just mothball the blocks and heads in the shop till i want them. A cam will pleasantly surprise you. It don't have to be one that slobbers like a rabid dog either. Shop around and ask a bunch of questions. Good luke and take your time. You're just 18.

I second the 360 heads on the 318 but I don't know about putting 2.02 valves in if your not going to build up the rest of the engine. I would just leave the 1.88? valves in it, get an intake, carb 600cfm, a MP 260/268 cam would really wake that up for not to much money and a set of headers.

I say stay away from the Js. To use them you'll need to mill them down or you'll loose a ton of compression. I think youd be better of with a set of later Magnum truck heads.

The best budget set of heads would be found on 86-91 318 passenger cars and trucks. Teh casting number ends in "302". They have 318 sized intake ports, and a much better exh port, and are based on a closed chamber and high swirl properties. Take those heads, and bolt them on. All intkaes fit, all valvetrain bolts up, they add about .5 a pt of compression(more with the thin gaskets) and can be found very cheap. However, when you buy them from a bone yard, make sure there is an exchange policy if they are cracked, and have them magnafluxed to be sure. A hotter version is to have 360 sized 1.88/1.60 valves installed, and some minor bolw blending done to smooth the transition between the larger seats and throat. The Magnum heads are one of the best by far, but need some special attention to just "slap them on". the 302s give some of the good stuff, and need no modifications to install. Keep in mind, a 318 is only giving up 22" of bore size to a 340, and they will run just as hard, but you need to do a little more homework before you can embarass the 340 crowd.

just another idea. i ended up running an isky 270 cam like 225@.05, with some shaved stock j heads, a 175k converter, 3.91 gears, headers, manual vb and a weiand xcellerator intake that i picked up at a swap meet for 20 bux. car did a best of 13.80 @ 96 mph. the 318 can/will run if you do a little work on it. i just decided to go 340. if i could do it again, i would go to a 360 for price reasons.
