Thanks Geof, well said.
It is true, those of us in the north east have a little bit of a different perspective than some of you guys in more temperate climates. Clean cars are at a premium around here since they really don't exist.
Adam is correct in his categorization of cars and the modified ones are definitely the most subjective. I guess you just have to know what you're looking at in those situations and make sure the car is actually worth what the seller claims.
Most of my point here is about lower level cars, like a '68 Dart 270. Do you buy a Dart 270 because of what it is? Maybe, but more likely you're like me and want a sort of sleeper vibe with subtle modifications. I love original paint, side moldings, original interiors etc. In general, these cars were not candidates for hot rods earlier in their existence since they were actually basic transportation for old ladies and the like. How many of you guys had a grandma that drove an old Dart or Duster until she passed?
I bought a '65 Valiant 100 a while back that had around 80K miles on it. This car was so basic it was like riding in a metal box. Actual radio delete, bench seat, 13" wheels, side molding etc. It was pretty clean for what is was and where I got it (Indiana) The thing is, it was really owned by a 90 year old lady when I bought it. She drove it back and forth to church and to the grocery store. That's it for 40+ years. These are the types of cars I look for. Not sure about everyone else.
Problem is when you look at these 'basic' cars, they're now priced the same as say a 340 car. To me, that is again artificial inflation.
