Guys I need some opinions quick. I'm about to build a 400-470 stroker for the street. This car will only see maybe 200 miles a year. Im getting mixed opinions on doing a solid roller for the street because of the pounding a roller set up gives and the longevity of the rockers. I do not want yearly maintenance. I am staying around a 600 lift, 240-250 @ .050 duration and a LSA of 113 for a EFI set up. The reason I need quick thoughts is I will be at Summit this thur. with money to burn. This is also backed by a 5spd and 430 grs fully tubbed and caged 63 valiant. I hope to post pics after paint. Thanks All ----- I guess I should have added info on the cam Comp. has already suggested to me---Ray said they would use the specs from a hyd.cam #23-70-9 and make it a solid roller. It has a duration of 248 and 254 @ .050 and a centerline of 109 and would move the LSA out to 113 for my EFI. He recommended springs # 16-953 but I don't know the pressure.

A lot of the "Pounding" has to do with the profile of the cam. A "Race" cam will have very pounding effects compared to a street cam of similar or what may even appear as the same specs.

If it were myself, and this concern popped up, I would call a cam manufacturer and have a cam custom ground just for this purpose. Tell them what you were planning on and what you expect from the car/engine with all specs on hand.

IMO, the cam duration is not big at all and could live in the street year after year. The adjustment of the rocker arms should not be yearly. It is not a big thing to adjust them anyways, just a pain in the a$$ chore to do when it crops up. (AKA when it gets loud!)

Spring pressure plays a roll here . The heavy springs take the life out of roller lifters and rockers . Flat tap cams have a longer life but you will feel the the difference in a big roller. I have a 686 solid roller in my stroker on the street so far no problem . the 700 kept braking lifter rollers. Thats a mess when it happens. The whole motor gets tore down. the little needles and metal everywhere. I am building another stroker it will be flat tap with iron non roller rockers. More streetable because of durability. not more performance though.

Couple of questions?? Do things get that temperamental (?) when you get up that level?? That little bit extra lift sort of send you over the top? Are/were you running the same spring with the 2 different grinds??

I built a 470"-400 a few years ago. Lost the Comp flat tappet(XS280S?) in the 1st 1k mi. Installed a street solid roller from Comp(XR280R? I don't have my paperwork here)with the recommended springs. The springs for the street solids are not that aggressive. Specs are 242/248@.050 and .570/.576 lift IIRC. Pressures are(again IIRC) a tick over 200 closed and a tick over 500 open? Been in there over 3 yrs now,I run the valves every spring and put on about 1k mi per year. Runs great, idles at 900 w/about 12" vac. Pulls easily up to 6k. Made 420 RWHP at 5500 rpm and about 500 ft lbs from 3k up:burnout:

Edit: mine's on a 110 LSA but I'm sure Comp could put it on a 112-113 for your EFI. All said and done I would probably have someone spec one for your efi build.

The Voodoo roller cams are great on the street as well. I have Many customers running them, no problems to date. They will widen the LSA to what ever you want. 112-114* is good.

I will be going with a solid roller in my build. Only thing I am doing different is going with Scorpion endurance roller lifters. They have oil feed to the roller.

The lift now is 668, " typo". It was the spring pressure and I was stuck with mopar long lifters bacause I didn't have the lifter bores milled off. It still has the tall bores. Same as 59 R3. .

:Dyou have to adjust either one so i will always go with what makes more power, with similar maintenance, have also heard good things about the out of the box voodoos, planning on one myself, depend on if you got 5 to 600 extra around if so solid roller or bust, good luck and keep us posted
