I acquired a 340 with a 67' Dart i recently purchased and I am wondering what it's approximate value is.

The block Casting number is: 2780930-340-6 Casting Date: 6*23*67
The intake casting number is:2531915 Casting date: 08287

I couldn't get the numbers off the heads

actullay those aint worth nothin and are supposed to be shipped to me for free
price varies on engines

It would be worth more to someone trying to do a restoration on a 68 340 a-body than to someone just looking for a 340 to put in a car. Being that the actual condition of it (internally) isn't known, most people would look at it as a core that needs a complete overhaul. I'd say around $500 if it turns faily easily, but that's JMHO

Id have to say if it turns freely and no spun bearings it is worth more then $500. Would be to bad but you could sell it in pieces for more than that. X heads $200-$500, intake $50- $100, V/Cs $50-$100, 68 timing cover $50-$75, Steel crank $100-$150, bare block $400-$600. JMO

It would be nice to re-connect the engine with its original car (mine if possible). Can you post the VIN#. On that engine it is located on the top, drivers side of the block where the back of the engine meets with the bellhousing. Thanks.

that is about the going rate on most of these parts for early 340, if not spun and std bearing the crank will bring more.
pull the valve cover and get the casting number on a head. did you get any exhaust manifolds with it?

I would not sell that engine as it sits for less then $1500.00 The $500.00 price quote is not even close. Of course most people dont see the value in these old 340 with all the crate motors avaliable nowadays. You will proablly need to find someone putting a 68 car together that wants a correct motor. Me on the other hand a guy that grew up driving these 340 cars back in the day would not trade on of them for anything, they were some of the baddest cars around on the street in the early 70's through the early 80's.

It's unfortunate, that like with most project/parts cars, it is worth more if sold in pieces.

Thank. I'll get the VIN# off the block. I had a tough time deciphering the casting
numbers on the intake runners. I'll pull the heads and get the numbers
underneath. I would love to reunite it with it's car.

You don't need to pull the head. Just look for a letter next to the spark plug hole. If you don't see a letter just take the valve cover off, the casting numbers are there.

Yeah, I have already had the valve covers off and could not make out the casting numbers.
I'll have to pull the heads.

The numbers are big.

These are probably not 340 heads. The numbers are no where near that big. I have added pics above.

Right hand exhaust manifold. I think it has a cracked flange. I took these pics a few weeks ago. I'm pulling the heads today. I'll check both the manifolds while I am there.

VIN should be on the front, drivers side of the block, not at the back. That was later.

Check the valley, and see if it has extra oil passages, with block-off caps on the head surface.(just out of curiosity)

68 vin should be on the bellhousing flange for 68 engines

The numbers on the front below drivers head are not the vin. They are the build info

Nice little engine. depending on if it has been over bored and how much I could see prices in a range of $500 to $1,500.

I would be interested in the lower range:D
