Choke Tower Carb without Air Cleaner Myth

Well, I read an article yrs. ago where someone (been so long ago I can't remember but I think it was Holley) did testing and claimed a drop base air cleaner directs air into the carb better than a flat base air cleaner. But.. not so sure about needing one to direct air into the carb if it has a choke tower. I haven't paid real close attention to it but I believe the choke tower sticks up higher than the air cleaner base so I'm not sure how it would direct air into the carb.
