HVAC Feedback appreciated -

I just don't know how we possibly lived "back then." I grew up in a home with no AC, none of the schools I ever attended had AC, and I never had a car with AC until I bought the 70 RR which had "hang on AC". And since then, I've had a NUMBER of vehicles without AC, including the 67

BRING BACK THE VENTS I say!!!!

You obviously have never been south of the Mason Dixon line in July / August...... :shaking2: I'm not sure how people ever survived in this part of the country before A/C but there is no way I could survive without it!:prayer:

Obviously, I have. I've spent time in the San Diego/ LA area, and about a year down in the Georgia area, with a short excursion into parts of Florida There's lots of people yet today manage without AC. Jus' sayin.

oklacarcollector---If you want to go to a website of a manufacturer and compare equipment GREAT--But DO NOT rely on ANY forum about so said product that has pissed off and pissed on people who went with the CHEAPEST price and paid the money never to have the contractor answer his phone again and then to complain on some forum about the product,When it was the installers fault,NEVER go with the cheapest price I repeat NEVER go with the cheapest price,Get three estimates,Check the contractor's background and references,You will find the most quality and honesty with the middle guy,Nowadays people are getting upwards of 8 to 10 estimates I will stay away from those people because they WILL go with the cheapest price.Remember furnaces are different,A/C systems are the same no matter who produces them,I have had just as many trane compressors fail as i have had any other manufacturer---Thanks Steve-- IT IS ALL IN THE INSTALL AND SET-UP I CAN'T SAY THAT ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again I don't see where anything on the net would be hurting you or any qualified installer that does a great job. I can see where it would hurt sloppy installers. When I search the net and I find a bunch of negative comments about a professional I am smart enough to stay away from them. My moto in life has always been "If it is good, it isn't cheap and if it is cheap, it isn't good." I do shop around but I will always evaluate the products as well as the installer. If I search out a product and I find numerous posts about the same problem on a given product in many different forums then I will stay away from that product. When I say by product I mean model number not th whole company.

Problems are something you will never find on the Company website. Example would be the Nissian V6 engines that have timing chain problems. The last time I looked they were on their third fix for the problem but this wasn't information wasn't on the Nissian website. It was verified by the shop foreman when the van went in for a timing chain at less than 60,000 miles. Without the forumns Nissian would have never paid for the chain because the vehicle was past the warranty in years but not in mileage. Nissian paid part of the claim after they intially denied it, because of the information found on the internet.

I am a hvca tech for over 20 years this is a good price hes not making a lot on this install,That being said depending on what units you get will determine how quiet it is. 95 % is good start.and 13 seer if sized right and set up will work fine.

Ok Fellas, Last winter, I discovered that the heat exchange in my Lenox furnace is cracked.....

So my wife's close friend's husband is supposed to give us a deal. He's a good dude, I've hung out with him a few times.
The guy does HVAC for a living and said he'll give me a good price on a furnace and AC. Here's one option:

Trane
95% Efficient Furnace
13 Seer
R-410A Refrigerant
2.5 Ton Condensing unit (A/C)

Installation includes wiring, ductwork, misc. parts.
Warranty
Lifetime heat exchanger
5 year parts
1 year labor

$4,650 Total. What do you guys think?

Arco440---Yep it is a good price but don't understand the warranty should be 10 years out of the box on the furnace at least here in Wis. everything is 10 year parts out of the box--Furnaces and Air conditioners--Is it different elsewhere????

So the installer has been working on my gad furnace/ AC install.
He brought an "Airtemp" yeah the one that was made by Chrysler YEARS ago. Now made by Nordyne that makes several names.

I hope this is a good unit. Any thoughts?

Also, I was kinda disappointed that he installed the Compressor on a PLASTIC pad on the outside of my house. He dug very little to "level" it, and through down some rough gravel.

I believe this should have be done on a cement pad or at least use pea gravel under the plastic pad and some sand.
Am I right?

I have been in the HVAC industry since 1979 and 2 years of Tech school before that. Here is the bottom line
1. Most equipment today is produced with the same components
2. All manufactures have baseline equipment and a higher tier equipment that is built better and is usually quieter.
3. A piece of equipment is only as good as the installation.
4. Replacing equipment is more then just swapping parts, if the entire system was not designed properly from the beginning new equipment will not help or fix past problems. The equipment needs to be sized according to the house, where its located in relation to the sun and region. If your contractor does not do a proper load calculation following Manual J standards and also makes sure for proper duct design then you are wasting your money.
5. I installed my entire system in 1995, it is a Lennox heat pump system in a tri-level house. It cools and heats correctly on all 3 levels and I have had 3 problems with it in all those years. I have had 2 run capacitors fail (one this past thursday, fixed it at 4am in the morning LOL) and had a refrigerant leak that I repaired.
6. Find a contractor that has a good reputation and be sure he does a proper evaluation on the ENTIRE system. You are going to pay anywhere from 5-8K for a complete new system.

There all just about made buy the man insaller just puts a different sticker on the unit
for the one that you buy Paul

if the only problem is a cracked heat exchanger, why not just replace the furnace?
