When was the car last titled?? I'm trying to figure out how it doesn't show the lien. If a Lien is put on property, the Title has to reflect it. Did the P.O. somehow have a 2nd title to give up to the Lien holder. Something just doesn't add up here!! You have a clear title to the Car, You have the car You should be able to register it and retitle it etc...

In CA you don't get the original title if there is a lien on your vehicle. The original goes to the lienholder.

He may have had a title that was prior to the lien. You usually have to surrender any title in your possession when a lien is attached. Did the lienholder request it? Could it be related to a child support issue. I could see them not negotiating on that type of lien.

This is part of the reason I ask are there any liens/encumbrances and have them sign as much on a bill of sale. If there are liens, you can then walk into a PD with the info and file charges.

Stinks about the mess the OP is in.
