Go back to the beginning, start with basics: pull drivers side valve cover, rotate engine around to #1TDC, pull distributer to make sure oil pump drive is correctly positioned; slot should point towards front bolt intake manifold, drivers side; if not, use large flat bladed screw driver to rotate drive around till it does, move it only one tooth at a time.
