1960-1962 Valiant/Lancer thread

Thought I would post some pictures of our 62 Valiants. The Gray one was used by my Father for a few years, and the Blue one came along thru a trade for my 65 D-300. Which I bought back, I missed it. I really enjoy the Valiants because my Parent's had a 61. Tom

408 C.I., pushbutton 727, 8-3/4" posi 3.73, 15 X 8 wheels, big car suspension, K-H discs in front and 10" drums in the rear, 1-1/4' front and rear sway bars.

Note to those installing the Mopar rear spring relocation kit: it changes the car's handling in a big way, and not for the better. The rear end becomes somewhat unstable and doesn't want to settle down again after a turn. A BIG rear sway bar cures that.

I've got a 62 identical to yours. Have some spare parts and a lot of experience with what not to do and where to find what I didn't have. Also, have a 62 Lancer parts car with a lot of rust. Not much left on it but the drive train.

SIX TWO SIG, I'll have to keep in touch with you. I'm in the middle of moving and changing jobs right now, so the Valiant is going to ignored for another month or two.

I'm hoping to learn to weld, using this project as my classroom. Any advice you have on that will be most welcome. For underhood work and any metal repairs, my finish colour will be Tremclad White. Cheap, sturdy, and available anywhere. If I ever get around to doing a real paint job, it'll be close enough to Ermine White that I won't have strip down the whole car again.

I'll be dropping in a 225 slant six where the original 170 once sat (now long gone). From what I've read, I'll need to watch for variations that were made to the engine's auxiliaries during its long production run. Rumour is that Volares and Aspens in the early '80s had the best of the bunch, although this "Super Six" was strangled by primitive pollution controls, which I would guiltily delete.

I'm not aiming to build a show car here, just a daily driver with character. All the loose trim that I've inspected so far is good enough for my purpose, except the bumpers, which need chroming. I fear that will make everything else look shabby and the "While You're In There's" will kick in. Must. Resist.

Where are you located in reference to Calhoun GA? It's always nice to talk Valiant's. Are you a member of the NGMC? Tom

To the top, again, after a 3-month lull. Road Toads are not on everyone's forum radar, apparently. I'm dealing on another '62 Signet this weekend. This one's gonna put my identical project car on someone else's trailer, if I get it. The prospect is a low mileage creampuff that needs nothing except replacing the non-original seat covers and door panels, if one felt compelled to do so.

I'm getting a mechanical inspection done tomorrow, then I'll see if I can meet the owner somewhere, pricewise. Here's the little beauty:

Hey, 62SIGNET, you mentioned you've got spare parts. Would you have an oil pan to fit a '62 Valiant/Lancer? Also, do you have the throttle linkage for a 225 Slant Six? Because of the extra height of the block, there's a difference in linkage shaft lengths from the 170 that came in my car. Please send my a Private Message if you've got any of these parts to sell.

btw, the beauty below was not meant to be mine. It seems the owner and I have significantly different views on its value. Let's just say I'm "NADA" and he's "Hagerty". Oh well, back to work on my basket case.

Nice car. These cars look a whole lot better with bigger tires than the original 13 inch stuff IMO.

I am a new 1961 Lancer owner and I have a couple of questions for the group. Does anyone have a picture of the horns on one of these? I see the '62 has them mounted above the shock mounts on the inside like on Tommy1Ton's photos, but my '61 doesn't have the mounts for them there. So where do they go?

Where is the best place to get a front sway bar for these cars? Addco is the only place that I can find that has an offering for the '60-'62, but it is only 7/8" diameter with a 3/4" rear bar. That seems too small for the rear size, especially considering that the '63 uses a 1.125" front bar with the same rear bar.

Also, there are 2 switch mounts on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. The far left mount has the light switch in it, but what would go into the other one? Thanks for your help.

Good to see a little activity on this thread, with fresh photos of road toads. Work on my '62 Signet has not progressed at all this year. I've been enjoying a '67 Valiant 100 2-door sedan as my daily driver. It's really plain, with standard steering and brakes and three-on-the-tree, although it does have the optional 225 engine. And a radio. Oh, and full wheel covers, too. It's a Seattle car with almost no rust. However, it's not a Toad so I won't clutter this thread with photos of it.

To powerflite, the unused hole is where the electric window switch for a station wagon tailgate window would go. On 1961 lancers the horns were mounted under/behind the front bumper on the fenders like 60-61 Valiants. Personally, after many years of driving these cars daily, I think the 7/8 front bar is perfect. The 1-1/8 bar will rattle your teeth and shock your kidneys on every road imperfection and introduce higher shock loads to your front end components (which are the lightest duty of any "A" body in '60 and '61) wearing them out sooner. However if your competing in SCCA road racing then bigger is sometimes better. Also, because the first few years had a nearly balanced front to rear weight bias (with a 170 CID) any sway bar set should be about the same size to preserve the neutral characteristics of the stock, as delivered chassis. It's easy to get caught up in the bigger is better, more is better syndrome. It really is all about tuning for how you drive the car. To this day I'm convinced that if Chrysler had offered a sway bar on these cars (even front only) they could have stopped the foreign sports car invasion single handedly that began about the time these cars came out, not to mention smashing the unstable tail-wagging Corvair or the super plowing (massive understeering) Falcon in sales. Best of luck with your project.

Thanks for the info ValiantPatrol.

So the horns are mounted inside the fender, in front of the wheel or outside the fender?Does anyone have a picture they can post of the horns on a '60-'61? Looks like I am going to have to fabricate some brackets to mount mine correctly so I will need something to reference to.

Just finished up Hot Rod Drag Week 2014 in my 62. 5 tracks, 5 days, 1100 miles of driving.Best of 10.49-124.7 on motor. Plenty left in her, not really dialed in yet. Love the new 428 small block!

Good luck!! Havent found one either, but I think I can re-use my old one, My problem is the sending unit is junk, cant find that either!!!

I have a new one that I bought. Put it in, but the gasket wasn't thick enough to seal. So I put the old one back in. The old one was working fine, but it wasn't stainless. I was installing a stainless steel line. Wanted it to look nice. What I learned is if it is not broke. Don't replace it. I have a new one if you are interested. I'll have to look to see how much it cost. I'm driving mine to work this week. It fun to drive.

are you talking filler tube,OR sending unit? If its the sending unit I am interested.

me, i'm talkin bout the rubber grommet for the filler NECK to the gas tank.... thanks if any one can help....

Atlas Obsolete Chrysler parts has what you are looking for. I am going to use them for the sending unit my 63 Valiant needs. They have the diagram of the parts with numbered breakdown of the parts on their site.

Is it true that the lower control arms on a '61 are different from the '62? When I look up lower ball joints, they are completely different. If so, would it be better to swap to the '62 version rather than to rebuild the '61? Are the '62 lower control arms the same as the '63?

You are correct,60 and 61 are very different. I have been told a 62 crossmember will bolt into a 61. SO you could change the whole deal. 62 and 63 would be the same. I looked at my 61 and with the steering box on the frame and other differences, I would check before I tried to change all those parts.

If youre gonna change the front end to a setup from 62-66 its bolt on all the way except from the steering column. Its shorter on 60-61. Othervise its no problemo....

Here's my '62 with a 170/6.
