8 3/4" from a 1/2 Ton P/U or Van For "A" Body

-
BTW, I have picked up an 8 3/4 truck housing with the 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. If you need one, the housing cleaned and painted with the axles is $150. I can ship in the lower 48 for about $90 or Deliver for free to Carlisle in July.

Dana 70 rear AND Dana 70 front ends were available in 1 ton Dodge pickups since the early '60s.

In fact, prior to 1975, you couldn't even get a Dana 60 front. All 1 ton and heavy duty 3/4 ton Dodge 4 x 4 trucks came with Dana 70 frontends.

OK, I scored a complete drum to drum rear axle including the pumpkin from a '67 Belvedere as well as a '68 housing & axles.

My hunt is over unless someone has a SG pumpkin W/4.56 or 4.88 gears.

The bonus is when you get into some of the earlier vehicles, 3.91 and sure grips were common. Used to look for the mid 60 to early 70 vans with slants. Usually geared numerically higher.

Slant-six pickups often had deep gears, especially automatics...I have even seen 4.11's! I think they phased out the 8.75" in favor of the 9.25" by the mid-70's, though.

For brakes, I would go for the larger B/E-body 10" (or 11"!) drums...when it comes to WHOA! power, bigger is usually better! (Yes, I AM the guy who is considering swapping to the B-body cop rotor setup on a 2700lb slant-6 Duster.)

Even the axles are excellent to use.

Unlike the C body axles, they do not have the drop size step toward the end and you can pay to have them cut and resplined. You'll end up with large bolt pattern if you do, but a lot of people go that way for disc brake conversions anyway.

I know someone in Colorado who will cut and spline them for $75 a pair, so you can use the housing, axles and buy new flanges for your brakes and relocate the spring pirches.

I don't live in a rural area and I'm doing it on the '73 to save money.

I think the pickups & vans use a 5" lug circle...you'd need to have the lug pattern redrilled for car brakes, and maybe the axle flanges turned down to fit inside the drums. Not saying it can't be done, but at that point, you might be better off just buying new axles.

However...for a narrow A-body, couldn't you have the common B-body shafts shortened & resplined? I have never been to a swap meet that didn't have at least a couple guys selling those!

Yes usually the 8.75 was not in 3/4 and 1T, the 9.25 replaced the 8.75 in the 1/2.

1T had 60's for a long time before 70's got under there, D-70's didn't get into and Dodge till 79, and weren't in the normal 1T, there was an option for the 60HD and 70 in the W-350, but most were regular D-60's and the 70's were used in the larger trucks.

.

My friend's grandfather ordered a 1976 W-300 new...it has a rear Dana 70. HOWEVER, a Dana 60 was standard: his has the 70 because it's a Camper Special with a 440. So...440, NP435 4-speed, NP203 T-case, front Dana 60, rear Dana 70...and factory A/C, tilt, cruise, and AM/FM/8-track/CB. ANyone drooling yet? :blob:

"Dana didn't supply D-70's to dodge till 79, someone could have put one in it over time, whats the bom # on the dana"

But how can that be true when even the 1977 FSM covers the Dana (then Spicer) 70 (see page 3-53 of the 1977 FSM)??

"The Dana 70 rear axle was first used in the Dodge W300 in 1958." - Wikipedia.

Perhaps you're reaching this conclusion because, prior to 1979, it was called the "Spicer 70" diff.??

My friend (same dude with the W300) had had two B300 motorhomes, 1977 & 1974...both with Dana 70HD's.

My 1990 W250 with Cummins diesel had a 70 out back a 60 up front with 3.08 gears and a NP205 Xcase... Beast.. Sure wish I still had that truck...

Dodge pickup had a 5 on 5 1/2 boltpattern from 84 on. before they were 5 on 4 1/2 UNLESS you had a 4 wheel drive. My 1980 1/2 ton power wagon has a 9 1/4 dana 44 front and 5 on 5 1/2 bp. My 79 1 ton had a Dana 60 rear (it was 2 wheel drive.) It is possible to run the 5 on 5 1/2 truck pattern on an A-body. I always wanted to try that..

Maybe some but I'm sure not all pickups and vans had a 5" lug circle cause I have a rearend out of a van in the garage that has 5 on 4-1/2 bolt circle. I haven't seen any B-body axles that you could cut down and re-spline for an a-body because right after the splines the axle necks down for a couple inches so there's not enough meat to spline. I haven't saw any axles that didn't have the neck down deal but full size trucks and van axles were so long they are usable because the A-body splines end up after the necked down portion. Just my .02
