I don't have first hand experiance, with that.
Ideal is to have a "O" ring in the block or head, and a matching receiver groove in the other component.
I have an "O" ring in the block, and no receiver groove in the head. It has worked fine. I know some have run a copper gasket without a "O" ring. With a copper head gasket head/block flatness is critical.
