Funny, I had a '96 RAM which would be the same starter.

We probably would have done the same because changing our starter out is going to be interesting but budget is budget.

Is there a way you can protect the starter from the heat ?

I don't know because my car is part Ram van now.(smaller starter)
Are those headers ceramic coated? I think your starter will be fine.
