Guys trying to figure out why the rear lights stay on and thick red wire that goes into the bulk head gets hot to the touch. I believe its the red wire coming from the starter relay. This is a car i bought recently and hasn't ran in 13' yrs. slant 6. I have been chasing down all these little issues to hopefully get it to start. Does turn over. No start as of yet. Thanks guys

I know the directional wiring thing in the steering wheel is junk the plastic pieces just fell apart when putting the newer steering wheel on. So i know i need to replace that as well. could that be part of the problem.

Yes sir. You could even have horn power going to the rear lights.

Pull up on our brake petal and see if it goes off.
There is a switch that contacts the brake petal when it is all the way up.
Just look under the dash it should be pretty easy to see.

Ok so you guys are great. The brake petal was hanging and not engaging the switch. So that leads to the next problem no brakes either and why does the petal hang inches from where it should. Is there a return spring or something that can be broke?

Check your master cylinder for leaks at the back (inside the car) near the pushrod. I've seen more than 1 start leaking there & the pedal dropped & the lights came on. Thats how we found it, by replacing the switch & saw fluid.

In addition to above, could be a few things. Rust, corrosion, malfeasance under there in the pedal hangers, the master, etc.

Bad/ misadjusted switch

BUT BUT DAMMMIT BUT................the switch hanging up should not cause any wiring to get hot. CHECK the bulkhead connector for poor connections. Something is generating that heat

I just HATE malfeasance..................

If it's been sitting for 13 years you probably have a bad master cylinder and it's possibly causing the pedal to hang up. In any case it may not be safe for braking.
