over charge

How is it that on my 340 with a new alternator and vr that I could be reading 13-14V at the battery with it running and at the batt stud on the alt. 15.5/16 does not make much sense to me the ground is good at the vr the amp meter bulkhead wiring was by passed was going to try running a 10 ga wire from the alt batt stud directly to to the srart relay batt stud might help? will try anything once ,any suggestions?
