I use a Hurst Pro-Matic right now but they all set up essentially the same. So you can't move the gear selector arm on the trans by hand? Some of them can be a little stiff, but I've never not been able to move one by hand.

When they talk about doing so, you need to do that to adjust the cable properly. I started in 1st gear and adjusted to that and then fine tuned it.
