And just because you can't shift it with your fingers doesn't mean you will damage the trans. I think what they are getting at is like described in post above is being able to set it somewhere to get things aligned properly.

The important thing to remember is getting the cable adjusted so the rooster comb is fully seated when in any particular gear in it's indent.
