Does anyone have pictures of the rear brake configuration for the 67' 9" drum brakes. My manual covers to many years and variations so its miss leading. I am attempting to redo the brakes but having trouble finding the right parts and the guys at auto zone don't seem to know any better either. So far I only taking one side apart went with the cheap duralast brand wheel cylinders, and pads. But the duralast all in one brake kit springs look bigger than my original ones. part #h7037 and it looks like the previous owner did not install the anchor plates on either side. Does the 7 1/4" rear brakes use the anchor plate? Any pictures or help would be greatly appreciated. I did try and do a search but didn't find anything to help full. Thanks

Find a CARQUEST or NAPA store that has seasoned help. Even if they can only copy the correct part numbers from ink on paper to ink on paper for you, you'll be golden.
When they ask "what engine" tell them its a six cylinder car with 9 inch brakes regardless what it actually has under the hood today.

does anyone have a part number for the anchor plates for 9" drums? auto-z, o'rielly, advanced auto don't carry them? thanks

Thanks I will give napa a shot. I didn't think it was going to be this hard to do the brakes. I'm buying stuff from all over trying to get the back brakes done.

After getting the rear drums done with new everything I started on the front. So far only found one brake guide plate on the whole car. So i need three more and can't seem to find them. I had replaced the master cylinder and bought a new adjustable push rod from doctor diff. As soon as I can find these guide plates I can finish and drive the car.

You'd be much better off with 10" brakes. The 9" drums were never adequate even for little old ladies.

I know but for right now I'm in the process of just getting it running and driving. I will be doing a disc swap eventually. But for the time being i am going through the car. Its a complete basket case.

What does the guide plate look like? I have a parts car with 9" drums all the way around! Could be able to hook you up with these guide plates if I knew what they looked like!! Geof

cosgig,
Its the small piece of metal that holds the top of the pads to the back plate in my photo just under the return springs. its like a washer that guides the pads when moving in and out. Not sure if you can see one in 2nd photo above. I attached something like it but these are a little different.

I have not found those brake retainers/guides/keepers anywhere. Are they just not manufactured anymore? Well if you guys come across any or a parts number at least I appreciate it. Thanks

I pulled off a set of front 9" drum brakes are they the same for front and rear?

A very helpful slantsix.org member Pierre sent me some guide plates they are a little different but should work just fine for the back brakes. However, the anchor post are different between the driver side and passenger. The passenger side works fine with the recess on the post and on the driver side there is no recess on the post. Not sure a previous owner must of switched backing plates or something. The guide plate on the left is the only one on my car and the one on the left came off of a early 70's demon.

Usually for about 100 dollars you can get the whole 10 inch system complete, You will have that much into yours.

You are right I got over 100.00 dollars replacing all the components on these 9" brakes. I didnt know any better at first. Once i got the car running I wanted to drive it. When I started digging into the brakes its one thing after another. Now that I got most of it completed my plan is to drive it like it is for awhile and look for 73+ disk brakes to convert up front and do 10" brakes in the back. Or find a 8.75" a body rear end with the ten inch brakes already on there. But from what I understand they are getting harder to find. Lessoned learned is don't bother with 9" brakes if your going to replace most of the components anyway. Find some 10" backing plates and upgrade from the begining.
