Need 273 Steel Head Gasket

-
Rusty, lol! Dammit ,Ed,! You are killing me,on notchback Cuda's!!!

I just got my my headgaskets from comtec (spelled wrong im sure) they were 93 bucks ea. & got them with 3.700 bore & .036 crush hight they offer them in .030,.036 & .040 thickness. it suchs payen just 2 200 bucks for head gaskets but whatda ya do?

273s are like the 383 - there are some extras that make them more costly to do "right". Head gaskets is one of them.
I find it funny. The car's completely torn down and being restored and the money can't be found for decent head gaskets? I guess it's moot now that you found it - but - really?

About 6 years ago I found a listing on ebay "273 engine gaskets" Pic and description of opened likely incomplete collection of leftover gaskets a father had left behind.
My winning bid was 40.50 I got lucky. 3 head gaskets, 3 cork rocker cover gaskets, much more.
I sold one of the 2 left side exhaust gaskets ( has manifold contoured heat shield ) for about twice what I had paid for the lot.

its not about spending the money on the gaskets, its just a WASTE of money. we dont waste a customers money...

oh, ok....lol.

so putting 200 dollar head gaskets is ok when the 40 dollar steel shim is more than enough? that's waste, we use them on all out Race Hemi's but not a stocker 273

got the gaskets, thanks guys.

P.S. they were on ebay

Did you try any NOS vendors such as Brads nos Parts ?You may get lucky,Just a thought.

Don't reuse a head gasket that been on for a while. I have reused a gasket because I made a boo boo in assembly but not with mileage or high compression. Is it worth the risk to save $23? .005 thickness will not be noticable in performance and hot spots are not an issue with a 9:1 motor

Years ago when I had the valves done, on the 273, the machine shop surfaced the heads, so I could use the more modern gasket, and retain the compression ratio.

Just for purposes of discussion - we define "waste" differently.
What is different about a race hemi vs a 273, or 170 for that matter? The question is not what is it going into - it's what does it have to do? Do you need a part that fits properly and will perform to the expected level?
I have performance shop management, machine shop, repair shop, and fabrication shop experience among other work history. Based on my experience I would have included the Cometic cost in the engine rebuild figure and just moved on. Because in terms of the business - $160 is not worth a shop employee being paid to locate them, paying to ship them, and taking the gamble that a 40-50yr old part arrives usable from a non-commercial source safely. just my opinon of course - but that's why I said what I said.

I'm here to tell you can run the Felpro gaskets on a 273. I've run them on 67 down small chambers, 67 up chambers, and even on 1.88 J heads. If you run full advance, 35 total, your 67 down heads with 2 barrel pistons 273 will still ping if you run regular. After 30 years and 300,000 miles they still don't weep fluids or need retourqued. If you can afford Cometecs, yea they would be great, but you don't need them...

what are you talking about? yes we can run felpro's and do regularly... but were not running a gasket that is almost a half an inch bigger...

Was thinking the same !!!

With all the fab work yall do, you could make some. It's not hard to emboss shim steel.,

Where did you get that $300 a set price for Cometic Head Gaskets????
They are $155 a pair whatever bore size up to .051 thick, even SB 5 layers are only $189.00... You need the gasket bore to be .030 larger than the bore size.

Im looking for the steel shim head gaskets at the moment for my 273 rebuild, and I can only find Cometic as a supplier.
