66 Dart Spindle Nut Torque
It's not about proper torque it's more proper procedure. For years I tighten the nut while spinning the drum (or wheel) until it is snug, back it off a half a turn and do it again. Basically you are seating the bearings and the races. If you do it 2 or three times it's ok. Then tighten the nut again till it is barely snug. I grab the drum and pull out and push in and feel for play. If you feel play or a slight clunk I tighten the nut a flat and check again. If the play is gone put the cotter key retainer on and install the key. Most retainers have 12 positions so if you need to tighten the nut 1/12th of a turn to get the cotter key in it's ok. The bearings will loosen as the grease breaks down so a tiny preload is ok. You just don't want them too tight or too loose. tmm
