1966 Dodge D/Dart ~ 'Mystery, Myth and Misconception'
Alan,
The Musser Brothers were the 'Kings of D/Stock', as nobody could come close to them.
They were capable of running 12.70's as early as mid-1965, yet they held back at
National Record meets, to keep the Record 'soft' at 13.02 during 1965.
The Musser Brothers were the 'Main Threat' to Mopar Factory-backed racers for
the Stock Eliminator Championship = {Dave Kempton C/SA and Doug Kahl C/SA}
in their 1962 Plymouth 'Sport Fury' 383/343 HP cars.
After the 1961 Corvette 283/270 HP 'Dual-Quad'
The other 'Top Dog' 'D/Stock' in 1966 cars were;
1} 1960 Pontiac Catalina 389/348 HP 'Tri-Power' of Dick Hill {Marion, Pennsylvania}
2} 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne 327/300 HP of Dan's Garage {Utica-Rome, New York}
3} 1965 Ford Mustang 289/271 HP 'K-Code' of Tom Vlakes {Delaware}
The 'biggest problem' was that there were only a handful of 1966 D/Darts produced. If Dodge
had pulled the trigger and built 250 or so, I'm sure that the D/Dart would have made a mark at the
Drag Strip.
