I currently have a stock 273 in a '68 Dart. I'd like to possibly squeeze some more power out of it. I've currently got what I believe is the stock system where the exhaust crosses over underneath the bellhousing and connects to become a single exhaust with some aftermarket muffler welded near the back. I've also noticed that right past the driver side manifold, there is a decent sized dimple knocked into it.

I was wondering what the going rate of having an exhaust/muffler shop installing a dual exhaust system on from the manifolds back? It doesn't need to be an H or X pipe system as I want to do this on the cheap. So that means no headers as I have power steering as well. I was thinking of just getting 2.25 or 2.5" straight pipes back and dumping right in front of the rear wheels or out the back. I was also thinking about providing Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers too. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your help!

Go all the way out back. It will keep you sane.

Out the back like 1970Duster said, give you room for muffler and yes, it will sound better and keep you sane, here in Arkansas front to back here not counting mufflers about $135.00 so if you go stock mufflers I think a total here would be $225.00
There on the west coast :dontknow:

You can always get one of these kits from Summit or Jegs.

I have a kit from Jegs on my Duster and I have cheap Hooker Headers. If it was me I would definitely install headers at the same time. Power steering is not an issue if you get the right ones. I believe these kits are made for the cheap longer headers, cause they fitted right out of the box on mine. I also have power steering. The mufflers are decent, I did however swap them out, but that was because I wanted a different exhaust sound.

This is my Duster with the kit from jegs, cheap headers and Flowmasters Super 44 mufflers.

Again, I don't want the headers because I really want the least amount of down time and don't really want to spend that much. Honestly, $200-300 for an exhaust does not sound bad at all, no pun intended. A pair of Dynomax run at about $90 on Summit. If I do this, should I get a 2.25" system? I'd think the 2.5" would be a little bit overkill for a stock 273 unless I upgrade to a 360 later.

I really don't know what this exhaust is, if it's from the factory but somebody put a huge dimple in it to clear the T-bar. I was able to fit about 2-3 fingers across most the way and if the exhaust wasn't dimpled I could probably fit a finger or so.

Mike...exhaust shop here in my city wanted $900 for a stock-size, dual system w/Turbo's...not bloody likely. I ordered a system from Kepich...1 small problem with the headpipes, easily cured , and only $249 shipped.

A 273 will work nicely with the best torque out of a single hypo exhaust. Even with headers. And a square tip will give you a nice sound.
Of course duals with 340 tips look good and would be the way to go if a 360 is in your future. A nice clean dual system may require crossmember work on the passenger side
