Actually you feel Acceleration. The change of speed or change of direction. You can multiply torque with gearing, in the trans and/or the differential. Horsepower is how you accelerate. Get in a 318 car and then a 340 car with same gearing and approximately the same weight. No comparison even though they are close to the same in torque. You all are trying to simplify things too much.
