only one way to find out for sure and it would need to be replaced anyhow so you may as well just replace it and see. It is possible it lost its ground and went open, but I wouldn't gamble on that with a sold car. just replace it and confirm a good ground before re-installing the cluster if you need to pull the cluster at all.
