Having a tire too big for the wheel well can be dangerous. NEVER use an air shock to give clearence. If the shock loses air suddenly (blown seal or cut hose) the body can come down onto the tire(s) and cause you to lose control. Even stiff springs aren't the answer if the tires are to big for the opening. I know of two cases where that scenario caused an accident. Both times, the car hit a big dip and locked one tire making the car spin out and crash. One hit a street lamp pole and the other went into a building.
