Hi!

I've been battling with this thing all day. I've never had so much trouble removing engine. Granted, this is my first time with a MOPAR. Everything else has been cake

So after following some advice here. I attemted to pull the engine from the top. All the bell housing bolts have been removed (so I hope!!). The motor mounts have been removed.

The Z-bar has been disconnected as well. This thing won't slide out. I've attached some pictures.

The headers are going to have to come out first.

Did you take out the torque converter bolts?

You have to remove the starter and trans dust shield to loosen it - 4 bolts.

Disconnect the headers also before pulling.

Unbolt the four tranny bolts from the bell housing.
Drop the trans out, it is extremely hard to align a motor to a trans, but easy to put a trans to a motor.
Take the headers and motor mounts off.
It should jump right out.

The ginormous starter has been dropped. Well, as far as I could drop it because it's captured within the headers. Damn Hooker headers!

You mean the lower bell housing inspection cover? I didn't think that would interfere, but I'll remove it. The headers have been unbolted from the heads.

Do I really need to remove the headers completely? Because if that's the case, at this point I'll cut them mother effers out!! LOL I'll have to disassemble part of the steering too if that's the case. Well, that's if I take them out in one piece.

Oh, no torque converter since it's a manual.

Ugh!! I'm exhausted!

And....Take that battery and coolant tank out before Murphy throws something on it. Have fun!

The headers can be tied up and away to the shock tower/shock bolts with wire. This will keep them up and out of the way and give you enough room so they can stay connected. You may need to disconnect them at the collector though if you have an H or an X pipe tying them together.

Yeah, headers will have to come off. I had '71 Dart and I pulled engine and tranny out at the same time. I did have the crossover pipe disconnected from the exhaust manifolds. Lift, and tilt. Also removed the tranny crossmember. Listen to RRR, he knows his stuff.

Bingo

No, just disconnect them from the head and make sure that they are clear of the front and rear studs. Pull them to each side for best clearance.

Ok, I always work on automatics. I'm used to the torque converter/flex plate bolts there.... :banghead:

I am too, plus there is still about 4" of transmission shaft stuck in that bell housing.

DROP THE TRANSMISSION OUT.

He has probably already damaged the input shaft on the trans.:violent1:

Ok here's the proof! It's out!! Thanks guys. It was that dust shield all along. Seem like no damage anywhere. That's a good thing!

For anyone following this thread that has a small block Duster with a manual transmission and is having trouble separating their engine from bell housing, learn from my ignorance!

  1. Unbolt everything including headers from heads, motor mounts, bell housing bolts (there's one hidden behind the starter...that bastard!!), z-bar, etc
  2. Don't forget the duster cover and inspection shield from the bell housing.
  3. put a jack under the tranny because it will drop forward
  4. (violently) pull the engine forward and it should slide out.

I hope I didn't miss anything.

Once again, the guys from FABO were awesome! I was ready to burn this car to the ground, only to find out I was n idiot. I honestly didn't think that cover would hang me up.

It might be easier to drop the trans crossmember, pull the trans and marry it to the engine and put it back in as a unit.

Use one of these to control the tilt as it's going in.

I would of removed the hood (Pencil mark hinge) pulled both engine and trans out together as an assembly.

It can be done with the hood on. Keep front wheels on the ground and put the rear on stands as high as you can go. Put engne and Trans in as 1 unit.

Since it is your first crack at a Mopar, we'll let it go this time.... :violent1:

But if you repeat this same mistake again, then you will qualify to be an idiot..... LOL! :evil3:

Mistakes aren't always bad, as long you learn from them.
