just wondering, would after market hemi heads bolt to a 440 block? I've done research on hemis, but I havent seen anything that says this cant be done....

There was a company back in the 80's that made a head, I believe that they called it a "Stage 5" hemi head that would bolt to the 440 block. Their design was superior to the other's as it had one bolt in the exhaust port and had better ports than the other competitors.

Hell they made Hemi heads for a la block as well. Don think they're made anymore but I think the price was about 7k for the heads.

wow really? sweet! but you do have to buy ones that were meant to be bolted to a 440, hmm. stage V makes some? or at least did? ill have to look into that, thanks guys!

Short answer is no. Factory 426 Hemi heads will not fit on a b/RB block. Even the stageV conversion heads require mods to the block.

When the Stage V conversion heads first came out in the 80's they required extensive modifications to the block. Reliefs for the exhaust pushrods had to be machined into the lifter valley of the block and channel stock welded in since the reliefs went all the way through to the water jacket. The top row of head bolts are recessed head Allen bolts that go through the floor of the intake port. Things have changed since they first came out. The Stage V conversion heads have reworked rocker shaft stands and rockers that moved the exhaust pushrods inboard towards the lifter valley and they no longer require the relief machining to clear the pushrod. The rocker stands and rockers are specific to the conversions heads and have to be used with the conversion heads. The top row head bolt still goes through the floor of the intake port but now the conversion heads also accept stock 16 bolt Hemi intake manifolds and stock exhaust manifolds too! They aint cheap. By the time you rebuilt your 440 with these heads I would guess that you would probably be within a couple grand or so of what a base 426 crate motor would cost you. But I still wouldn't mind trying if I had the $$$

By the time you do the entire conversion, you couldda bought a Hemi. Kinda stupid, really. Now the early Chrysler Hemis, the heads will bolt right onto some of the poly motors with no mods whatsoever.

About 20 years ago, my brother built a Stage V Engineering 440 conversion Hemi.
The modifications to do this weren't that hard, the major one was a oil drain back line that had to be drilled and installed in the block from the cylinder head. (Not that hard at all.)
The heads and the rockers especially were a work of art, it was almost a shame to put the valve covers on!
The guy himself that manufactured them had a last name of Hansen and he had his name cast into the head.
When i was down in Southern California one year at the Winternationals, we went and had a small tour of his shop and a b.s. session. He was one of the nicest guys i ever met, and did all the work and machining himself, a true one man operation.
He had Hemi heads and valve covers stacked up like cord wood, Drool Drool Drool!
He manufactured a lot of special rocker arms, used primarily for Alcohol Funny Cars.
I sure wish i still had the pictures of the engine my brother built and Stage V Engineering's shop.

They still do. The company that sells them attended the NATS. I was talking to them about where they are having them cast and they confirmed they are cast locally to me. I didn't ask the price but I am sure they are not cheap!
