When I install the new shifter I'll also be under the car on the rack and ensure that all the gears are properly engaging as I move the shifter through the notches. But you are correct, it has to engage solidly in each gear. If you saw how I designed the linkage (under the car) you'll know that I can change the effective throw/travel of the trans lever. Since the stroke is adjustable I'm sure I can get it perfect.
