6.4 Hemi Trucks

-
Ditto - thinking of trading my 2500 diesel in on the 6.4 gas for milage reasons-steve

We've sold quite a few of them, but I haven't heard any feedback yet..... and towing out here sucks!! they get a thumbs up here it should be ok about anywhere. I have noted the average mpg in a few of them was high 14 to low 16 when they came in the shop.

My truck is a 2014 ram 3500 diesel high output dually set up for towing with 4:10 gears and average is 16-18, I towed my 67 dart home when I bought it and with the car in the open trailer and the bed full of parts I barely even felt it back there, plus my average was about 15.8 still towing. If your towing my .02 is a diesel all the way, I've towed with both gas and diesel and prefer diesel.

I have an 09 Ram with 5.7 Hemi.I normally get 17 to 18 mpg around town, and i've gotten as much as 22 mpg on hgwy(empty bed not towing)Towing is a different story,I get about 12 mpg towing .This is ok for me because I drive my truck every day and tow accosinally.I love my truck......................................Jeff

Thats a 5.7 thou,I saw the head honcho's from dodge at a dealership this week, the both had the new 6.4 in 2500 trucks and i looked them over ,turned the key on to look at the digital display for mpg's and both read 18.6 for a average,I'm lucky to get 13 out of my diesel and thats NOT towing anything it plain out SUCKS, Yes i have the exhaust delete kit and a smarty chip in it and didn't do a thing,I have a pre smurf piss truck, the diesels just don't live up to any promises the dealer told me,Yes it is better for towing BUT you have to be towing all the time to make up for it not just casual towing like we do,It kills me seeing gas prices drop and diesel is STILL above what premium gas is,When i started buying diesels the fuel was CHEAPER than regular gas and I don't thin we will EVER see that again,It's like being corn holed by your best friend-Steve

Hell my 07 2500 touched 20 mpg now and again on citiy driving,I would NOT suggest a 07 and newer diesels to ANYONE but someone who tows for a living--Steve

Totally agree with what you stated Steve.... and I work on them. "BUT".... the 13 newer with DEF system is slowly but surely changing my mind back to believing you can have the best of both worlds with your Cummins equipped Dodge. Hindsite being what it is the emission laden 6.7 trucks were best left to those towing.... heavy, and often. I've lost count of the trucks with unhappy owners dealing with soot issues from using their truck like a car..... and not many of these folks can drop 45K on a new truck just to let it sit. Those that have traded up to the DEF equipped trucks from what I've seen have had zero issues with a regular driving style, great power, and mpg driving empty from 18-21 mpg. The EGR is used way less so regens are cut way back so the oil life has been extended big time! I've had guys that still had 30% eng oil life at 9K miles. The new trucks also have something that should have been in place back in 03 with the intro of the common rail...... TWO fuel filters. Filters are $67 each, and still require changing at 15-17K from what i've seen of the fuel filter minder programmed into the new trucks. A little more out of pocket, but considering the investment ahead of them.... well worth it and overdue. Now back to the original topic..... I'm still interested in how the 6.4 2500 tows a trailer. If we get a used one in I'm going to take one up the pass with my trailer in tow just to see what they are all about. MPG is a moot point when I'm towing.... I just want the job to get done, and my 01 modded CTD only gets about 11-12 towing anyways.

Great info A body-One of my employe's has a 2013 with the def system and he is in the same boat as I am-Ready to get rid of it,He gets about 1 to 2 more miles to gallon than I do and really the def cost in my mind doesn't come into play,DO you know if the 6.4 requires premium gas ?????? if so then it really doesn't make sense for me to trade mine in,I don't get why dodge doesn't have flex fuel motors so a guy could use e85 if he wanted,Hell GM has had them for years and If i'm not mistaken ALL gm motors are now E85 capable --Steve

My 03 2500 desiel gets 19-20 around town and 24.6 on the highway. Towing car on open trailer was 16. Best thing I did was the full 4" exhaust from the turbo back. Did the hypertec down load stage 3, fun as hell but ate to much fuel. Went back to the stage 1. Last truck I'll ever buy, should last me till I cant drive anymore.

my 07 6.7 g56 qcsb deleted and straight piped with a smarty gets 20s empty, now days it seems these trucks are lousy till you can delete the emission crap, i believe the 6.4 is a mid grade burning fuel engine, the 4.7 is the only e 85 flex fueled engine, my guess is if your a hot shot service the 6.4 wont last as long as the diesel, but for everyday driving and occasanional pulling the 6.4 is the way to go

Yep I had similar results with a 03-Nothig under 16mpg no matter what u did and again with a 07 nothing ever under 16mpg even pulling 28ft race trailer loaded but move up to a 2012 I presently have and can't touch 14 mpg EVER,What a joke this government **** does to us end users,I never should have got rid of the 07 it had 170,000 on it when i traded it in--Steve

I picked up my 14 -2500 6.4 yesterday i will keep u posted - steve

Hey I got 200 miles on and the gas gauge didn't move yet,Haven't seen that in the last 10 yrs with a diesel-- Steve

Maybe it's stuck lol. The 6.4 in my jeep gets 16-17. The one in my challenger I get 24 with on the highway.

Damn, I'm about to list my 12v for sale and get something newer, I had thought about a 6.7L but I'm not sure, the 5.9's have been damn good to us and when we started playing with turbos, injectors, timing and pumps they started making some snot..... and tearing up transmissions lol

Hey Dylan, all i can tell u is my experiences. My 03 and 07 with all the deletes and programmer (5.9) had absolutely the best mpg.my 2012 (6.7) pre d.e.f. truck had the emission deletes and a programmer was horrible no matter how i drove.my buddies late2012 with the d.e.f. got 4 mpg BETTER than mine all the time and his is stock.Steve

My average since last Wednesday is 13.8 city driving,I'm heading to Indiana tomorrow with 3 race engines going to Dunnuk racing to get freshened up so I'll post back what goes on at 70 mph--Steve

I should also explain this is my work truck so back seat full of tools,Aluminum cap with side cabinets full & ladder rack ,I have a steel bed slide in the back so it's not empty by any means and carry parts in back all the time, One thing I can tell you different from the Diesel is absolutely NO bump steer what so ever and my Diesel had horrible bump steer from day one and it was aligned several times on the dealerships dime,But the diesel is 700 pounds heavier --Steve

I did quite a bit of research on these before ordering one for work. the consensus has been that those who own them have seen an increase in fuel mileage after they get a couple thousand miles on them. I am not sure what to really expect with the one I ordered, 3500 series dually four door with an 8 ft bed and 4:10 gears. That will not help the mileage much and once the lift-gate and rack is installed that will knock it down a bit more I believe. We shall see, it is supposed to be in sometime this week and then the fun of tearing it apart will begin to do the above, paint and letter it.

Yep mine is a 2500 crew cab -big horn addition, 4.10 rear,20,000 miles, the previous owner loved the truck, he traded it in for a 3500 -6.4 -steve

I have a 07 3500 crew cab with 5.9 and 6spd. avg around town has been 16-18

open hi-way it has seen about 19-21 as long as I stay under 2200 rpm
if I run 75-80 mph it gets about 15mpg.

it has 160k miles on it now and im second owner.
only draw back is the injectors. I replaced 3 already and think I have 1 on the way out now.
also the A/C sucks on these trucks
