6.4 Hemi Trucks

-
Ok got back from indiana,390 miles round trip-trucks computer's average qas 14.8mpg-so i did the math and came out exactly at 14.8 mpg-i was surprised the computer was dead on because my diesel trucks never figuired that correctly, average speed 70-75 on interstate but shitcago was a stand still, not overly impressed BUT no depressed either cause mu diesel would have cost $120 to fill and this only cost $65.00 so that's a win, i really couldn't tell if and when any cylinders cut out with the mds and stupid me i didnt really pay attention to the rpms DAH !!!!!! Also something to remember we are on winter blend of gas here in good ol wisconsin-steve

Next test -pulling a trailer, will do that next week-steve

get some mileage on it and the gas mileage will increase and put some good synthetic oil and that will help some too, it did for my 5.7 1500

I was wrong -I have 3.73 rear gears not 4.10-Also 1600 rpm @ 70 mph-My dealership HATES synthetic oil-Go figure--Steve

Got the call that the one I ordered came in. Picking it up tomorrow but not sure when I will have everything done to it so it can hit the road. The one complaint I have heard about them is not having the green eco light come on like the my Charger has that lets you know when the cyl deactivate kicks in.

Dont think i have a eco light, i have a mpg l.e.d. gauge-steve

Do the big trucks have the cylinder deactivation? thought that was just the 1500. my 2500 power wagon does not have that feature, but its a 2010.

The new 6.4's have it in the trucks. this is from the Ram website
THE 6.4L HEMI® V8 ENGINE WITH FUEL SAVER TECHNOLOGY
The available 6.4L HEMI® V8 engine with Fuel Saver Technology delivers Best-in-Class gas horsepower+.
Fuel Saver Technology shuts down four cylinders when cruising or driving downhill under light loads to optimize efficiency without sacrificing power

It doesn't say anything about it in the 5.7's though

Yes they have MDS but not the VVT, kinda wierd why they didnt do the variable valve timing .steve

I have a 2014 6.4 Hemi 2500 long box crew cab 4x4 to pull my dart. went to buy a diesel but the new emission on the new model scared the hell out of me. going to the black hills in south Dakota it got the best of 14.9 mpg with the cruse control on and plenty of power and that was on low grade gasoline. Has 12k miles on her and no problems at all except recall notices and the 0-40 grade Syn motor oil. Oh, empty it gets up to 17 mpg:D

does anyone seriously think a bigger gas V8 is going to get good mileage. heck, throw the V10s back in them, with MSD.

Comparing to the latest crop of emissions laden diesels, is a hard sell too. Comparing to 07 and earlier is pointless, as your comparing a brand new truck to a 7 yr old design, that had none of the current emissions crap.
Deleting is a risk, some states will check if the emissions devices are in place. Thankfully AZ isn't one of them, as many go the delete route for their late model Cummins. Finding the right tune for mileage is key too even after you delete.

Keep posting on the everyday use of the 6.4, and comparing its power to that of a diesel. Occasional towing, why waste the expense on a diesel. Every day work and tow, I'd still be inclined to use a diesel. Not everywhere is getting the cheaper fuel, but hey, its under $3 now, which is nice compared to where its been.

So many people sold off their diesels when it jumped up a while back. I look at it this way. higher fuel cost or a truck payment. Easy for me to pay higher fuel, and no truck payment.
