Grant steering wheel install troubles

This isn't exactly like your column, but it is similar enought to show the ring I mentioned.

It's hard to tell in the pic of your column, but it does kind of look like the shaft doesn't stick up high enough and it will do that if the ring is missing.

Pull up on the shaft and see if it comes up almost and inch.
