stock 5.9 magnum gives surprise in bracket car
Short block must have been built on a Monday at the factory. Very impressive performance.
LOL, it must have been.
I would like to be clear about one thing, though.
Running it on methanol is the ONLY reason that the car ran in the 7's with the stock magnum. That 7.73 was in killer weather conditions as well. the norm for it after the methanol switch was high 7.70's to low 7.80's. I know this is the racers forum and most here have been around methanol.
However, for the guys who don't know much about methanol, it's FAST!
It depends on the set up, but switching a car from gas to methanol will normally pick the ET up from 2-6 tenths of a second. From my experience, the slower the car is, the more ET it will pick up when switched. I can't say why, but that's been my experience.
Just felt the need to put that out there for those who may be looking on, and not know.
I felt like the car would go 8.60's to 8.80's with the stock motor on gas. I was really shocked to see it go 8.20's on the 2 barrel, and end up going in the teens with a good carb on the 4 barrel.
This whole experience has been enough to make this ol' boy start grabbing up 5.9 magnum engines when I run across one reasonable. May even grab one or two 5.2 magnums. they would be decent bracket motors with a 4 inch crank and 390 cubic inches.
I have also found out that the car has 4.10 gears in it and not 4.30's like I had thought.
