Just wondering what off the shelf engine oil everyone is using with higher zddp levels. Was thinking of using Rotella

Rotella isn't a good choice for a gas engine ZDDP has been reduced across the board including diesel oils.
I use royal purple but prefer Brad penn when I can find it I've also used champion classic/muscle car oils and they're real high in ZDDP.

I was running 20/50 and switched to 10/30. Psi is still fine and probably picked up a few HP

expensive but its only 1oz per quart to replenish the zddp that is lacking in newer GF-4 motor oils.

lookie here: the 2nd number is the oil number that needs to be matched to spreadsheet.

the 6th number in matrix is ZDDP levels...so oil #1 has 1541 ppm of zddp. sorry but I cant format data any better than a spreadsheet can.

Look at oil 20, its the best:

Oil 20 has the most additive of any oil we’ve seen. This is very
likely an expensive, but great, Diesel engine oil! Since the additive
package is so expensive, I’ll also bet this oil is a full synthetic. This
is the best Diesel oil in our comparison, but don’t use it in passenger
cars or light duty Diesels
. Recall that really high detergent Diesel
oils sometimes don’t offer adequate protection for sliding cam
followers in these engines.

I actually took the time to call Valvoline motor oil and talked to a tech guy a few years ago. He said if your car is well broke in (for example: 60,000 miles), he said regular motor oil of your choice will be sufficient. He also said for heavier valve springs and higher lift/duration cams, or newly rebuilt motors, VR1 will more than offer the protection needed. He said VR1 will so much protect the cam, that you can break a new cam in off of it. That being said, I took his advice on my stock LA 318 and have been running QS Defy (that I use in all my vehicles) for a few years now, and absolutely no problems. The Defy is suppose to have a little extra zinc in it anyways, and it has a small amount of synthetic blend. Every Walmart carries it and it's only 16 bucks for 5 qrts in a jug. All my other cars are roller cams.... the easiest way not to worry.... :)

Royal Purple syn 10/40 , has enough zddp in it . Used to run ELF syn 10/40 , added a bottle of zddp plus every change , so far 12,000 miles no trouble everything looks new when it was opened up to change heads and oil pan gasket .

Nothing "on the shelf" will have what it needs if it carries the SAE starburst medallion on the bottle. That includes the Fleet (deisel) oils. If I think it needs it I use Not For Street Use VR1, Joe Gibbs, or Brad Penn. If it's a milder cam (running a single spring with dampener or single springs) then a fleet oil like Rotella should be fine after the cam's broken in. Synthetics should be fine too. For those I personally use either Car Quest 20/50 or 15/40 depending on the build.

went 2 a kendall semi nar talked with them they use kendall in all lotus ferri mazarottes, all high performance cars ,and being of the sixtys a peace sign on the bottle I was sold wouldn.t use any thing else.built many of motors over the years trouble free just my 2 centsw.

From my vast research on the hot subject.
1. Diesel oil has more detergent than necessary for a gas engine.
2. Racing oil doesn't have enough to hold contaminates in suspension, which means change it more frequently.
(Unless you burn or leak it like my driver. In which case just add to it till the change. Because I got a lifetime supply of the synthetic stuff on closeout at Advance)
3. STP has zinc.
For what it's worth. I've got a 86 318 cop motor with almost 200K on it. I've run Mobile One for years in it.
And you can read anything on the internet.

its a miracle my engines even work .
