Why are 318's low HP and torque?

i'm rebuilding my 318. its over pored to .40 and i use stock style pistons. pistons are now 0,096 - 0,104 under deck, needs lots of grinding to get 9.1 comp... :D

Well this is probably too late to help, but why ever use stock smog era pistons in any 318 rebuild? The earlier style KBs are a lot closer to 0" deck height with only a surface cut, leaving a lot more meat for a stable cylinder head mating surface and eliminating the need for intake milling to get everything lined up in most cases. Keep in mind all LAs are thin wall castings, it's not like the \6 where you can mill the c**p out of everything and still have a stone ax.
