4 speed, not auto.

My tentative plans are to replace the rockers, push rods and lifters to hopefully solve the noise issue.

I have my fingers crossed that it isn't a bad cam bearing. And I need to take a good look at all the valve springs too.

I had an ear on my flex plate crack about ten years ago, it was knocking and I was going to pull the engine and found the one tab came off with the flex plate bolt. May be worth pulling the inspection cover.
