Hooking up reverse lights

Installed new Hurst Pro-Matic shifter, instructions for wiring back up lights a vague to say the least. Picture shows shifter with 4 blades, two are for neutral safety which I don't need. I'm holding the plug in from factory floor shift. White wire is hot, purple not sure, ground maybe. I've plugged both into connections on left in picture, I get back up lights but in all the gears. Can't figure out how to connect for just back up lights. :banghead:
Called Hurst and he said to splice hot wire into the two connections on left. I don't know it didn't make any sense to me, but wiring always throws me for a loop. check back later
If he told you to connect the +12 volt wires to the left terminals on the switch, then it would logically follow that when the ignition is on, one of the right side terminals will have voltage only in Park or Neutral and the other right terminal should have voltage only in Reverse. This assumes the switch is adjusted correctly. Connect your +12 volt wire to the top left terminal and check for voltage on the top right terminal in each shifter position. Do the same when the +12 volt wire is connected to the lower left terminal. It should be obvious which right side terminal is which function. Connect your wire that goes to the reverse lights to the right side terminal that is powered only in reverse. That should be the purple wire if I remember correctly.
