I had to try to get my lock ring in a few times also, as it kept getting off center and the one lock tab wasn't engaging... It took me about 3-4 tries to get it engaged and centered enough to engage all three "tangs"...

The current aftermarked lock rings do not engage the sending unit and seal enough to seal. It's best to reuse your old lock ring or buy one from halifaxhops. He picked up a few NOS rings and is selling them to who needs them...

Much appreciated on the gasket question. I am re using my old lock ring, due to reading that before.

My issue is actually arising from the two tabs on the sending unit. (See pic) They apparently engage the two openings on the front of the tank. (see pic) My guess is to center the sender. I can't get them both engaged so that the sender sits flush against the tank.
