I am currently rung 2.94s behind a stock 69 318 with a street dominator, 625 Edelbrock carb, 340 exhaust manifolds and dual exhaust. It has a 2200 stall converter and I built the 904 with the low first gear. It works really well.

Free up the exhaust, open up the breathing, keep the Dcr up and a wide powerband with the stock cam. Give it a low 1st gear and a reasonable rear gear.BA-DA-BOOM.
I have built several personal rides like that, usually with a TQ, and upped the rev-ability with a bit of extra springing.
