How much initial timing? If advancing helps and it will still start, you may want to re-curve the distributor.
Is this a new install? Just a problem that cropped up? Did you do some other mods before working on the carb?
The base of the carb should be checked with a straight edge to make sure the ears are not bent down any. If they are a body file can true it up pretty quick.
