Thanks for the grounding tip JD, that makes sense and I would not have done that had you not mentioned it.
As for the hole, it's too big for a fastener. I think it may be for a vacuum line for the heat/ac controller....
We're going with fatmat as insulation on the firewall once I figure out all the penetrations
