Is this a thing that has been documented for our cars before? Like cutting a pipe or two and running it in a different way for better fitment/ground clearance on the driver side?

I don't know if it has been documented but it is not that hard to do. the only thing I think you would give up (or maybe gain) is keeping the tubes equal or near equal length. But I don't think you would notice a change either way if one or more tubes were slightly different.

Whatever it takes...
Seems like it doesn't matter who built it, or how much it costs, Fitment issues keep popping up.
I think my next set will be shorties. They'll be tuned for like, 10,000rpm. Man-oh-man I'm gonna have power!

I think it depends a great deal, on which headers you have,,.. a quick search will show which headers have the least fitment issues..

If any changes could be documented the jobbers would have already done it. And if they tried they would be changing rev. levels with every car thats fitted. Becsuse every car is different.
With that said, if you cut runner #1 before the collector and make it a slip fit or v-band it makes life a lot easier for you and your a-body.

I cut up a generic pair of 67-up headers and a drivers 5.2/5.9 ram/dak header and worked them into an early-a. Im not a big fan of headers anymore. I tucked them up AS CLOSE as I could and they still scrape, I cant ever get them to seal for any length of time and they wrap around both torsion bars, the column, and all the shift linkage. If I were to do it again Id buy a pair of tight tubes and modify the drivers side to fit. Honestly, it wasnt worth the few HP over nice quiet manifolds.

We have a member who modified a set of the Hedman shorty headers to fit an early A. The passenger's side dropped in and he had to move one pipe on the driver's side. Might try a search and see if it comes up.
