From what I herd the automatic car never race as an automatic car. It was supposed to be a 4 speed car. So Hurst but the 4 speed stuff in the trunk and Landy swap it out at his shop?

Somewhat correct

Dick Landy was at the Hot Rod Magazine Championships on March 23 & 24 in 1968
and was running an LO 23 in SS/BA.

The other LO 23 was 'tagged' as an Automatic, and was shipped to Dick Landy
in a Storage Box via Railway ti his shop in Sherman Oaks, California.

That car was shipped with all the Clutch-Linkage in the Trunk.
