As I am reassembling my dash a question occurred to me...what does the underdash (Shoddy) pad mount to? I have a firewall insulation kit and the underdash pad kit, but I am not sure what the pad mounts to. When I took my dash apart, I do not recall seeing any signs of insulation under the dash frame, but I was not there when the dash was removed from the car. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Resurrecting an old thread. The firewall pad has plugs that attach it. What holds this pad in place?

It is glued on with weather strip adhesive. When I pulled one off of a dart I had you could see where the just kind of s shaped the way the squirted it on and then stuck it up.

And it's a PIA to get back in there and around everything. :D
I just put it back all the way up to the top of the firewall and didn't even bother trying to get it all up around the wiper arms and stuff.
Just enough to block engine heat.

I know this is an old thread, but I just did this step. You have to have the dash and heater box out for the firewall pad. And the shoddy pad is cut to fit around the cowl opening, and wiper motor mount points. You can figure it out by looking at it. I sanded the undercowl area, cleaned and primered and hit it with some flat black paint to cover the metal from flash rusting. The sanding to me is important because the old adhesive is still on the metal. Then I sprayed the adhesive to the metal undercowl, and to the shoddy pad. Waited a minute or two, and stuck it up to the undercowl. I wouldn't use weatherstrip adhesive because gravity is playing against you, it seems like it would be messy compared to spray adhesive. I have my pedals installed in the car, and it was straightforward working the shoddy pad around them. The drivers cowl/ventbox will have to come out to mount the drivers side firewall pad.
